St. Francis is the patron saint
of birds and animals. As the story goes, he preached to the birds
and they listened and he preached to them often. Helen Slater
captures the spirit of this saint of
the 11th century by dressing him in simple monks attire and
allowing the birds to rest on his
shoulders and hands. The reader will note that a bird is missing from
this bird bath. By design
Ms. Slater eliminated the bird in this version. (To see the missing bird
